A look at what we will be studying this week.........
  • In Language Arts we will be working on our final copy of "Letters to a First Grader"  Each student was assigned a first grader and wrote to them about what to expect in second grade. 
  • In Math we will start with Chapter 15 "Model Multiplication and Division"

  • Please continue to read for the Reading Calendar, it will be due the last day of school.
  • The summer reading English books are on sale at Metro Media. You will need to buy the books for Second Grade. Spanish books (for summer reading) will be sold by Metromedia on Tuesday May 31st in school.
  • We will be having Field Day on Friday (in the morning).  The moms will be having shirts made for field day. 
  • We will be having pizza for lunch and a movie as a reward for their good behavior on Friday afternoon.  You do not need to send a lunch on Friday.
  • Happy Birthday to Natalia R. on May 27th, Emonee on May 30th, and Adriana on May 13th.
  • The last day of school is Tuesday, May 31st.  The students get out at 11:00.

May 2nd - May 6th

A look at what we will be studying this week.........
  • In Language Arts we will be working on some suprise Mother's Day Activities.  We will continue working on an Earth Day writing.
  • In Math we will continue working on Chapter 12 - Measurement.  We will discuss centimeters and then Area.
  • In Science we will continue with our unit on Animals. We will be looking at Chapter 2 in the Science book. We are working on a flip book that tells about how the different animal groups adapt.  We will be taking a test on Friday over Chapter 2.

A look at what we will be studying this week.........


  • In Language Arts we will be writing personal narratives about our Semana Santa.  We will also be reading a book called Wump World by Bill Peet.  It is a wonderful book about pollution.
  • In Math we will start Chapter 12 - Measurement. 
  • In Science we will continue with our unit on Animals. We will be looking at Chapter 2 in the Science book.

This week's words have to do with Earth Day.

Week of April 11th - 15th

A look at what we will be studying this week.........

  • In Language Arts we will be working on writing our animal research papers.  We are working on taking their research notes and putting them into their own words.  We will also be discussing suffixes, how they effect the meaning of the word and how to find the root word.  This will also help them in their decoding.
  • In Math we will finish up Chapter 11 2D and 3D Shapes.
  • In Science we will continue with our unit on Animals. We will be looking at Chapter 2 in the Science book.   Students will begin presenting their animal projects on Thursday.

A look at what we will be studying this week.........

  • In Language Arts we will continue to talk about adjectives. We will discuss how they are helpful and how we can use the in our writing.
  • In Math we continue with Chapter 11 2D and 3D Shapes.  We will discuss the differences and compare them.  We will continue to talk about the faces, edges, and vertices.
  • In Science we will begin a unit on Animals.  We will be looking at Chapter 2 in the Science book.  We will discuss vertibrates, mammals and animal adaptation.

With the musical quickly approaching, more and more details are needed to be communicated to you. I am not involved in the musical so I can not be of much help.

  • In Language Arts we will be review Opinions and discuss Facts.  Students will be able to identify the difference between the two and write them.  We will also work on making predictions and confirming their predictions.

  • In Social Studies we will continue to look at our earth's natural resources and  we use them in our everyday lives.

  • In Math we work on Chapter 10 - Place Value to 1,000.
  • In Social Studies we will be looking at how we depend on our resources.

  • Order forms for family day t-shirts went home on Friday.  The due date for the ordering the shirts is March 18th.  Family Day will be on April 2nd.

  • In Language Arts we practice more with writing the beginning, middle, and end of a story.  We will also be writing predictions.
  • In Math we will start Chapter 10, Place Value to 1,000
  • In Science we will learn about magnets.  We will take a short quiz on Thursday.

Wednesday - Read Gooses's Story page 47 in the Treasures book, this will count as your reading for the reading calendar. On page 73 Answer question one of the questions, your choice as to which one you want to answer.  Study for spelling test and magnets quiz. 


A Few Other Things.................

  • We would like for you to leave the Reading Calendar in the homework folder at all times.  We will be checking the calendar every Monday to make sure your child read a minimum of 4 times the past week.  We are also looking for the parent initials.  There is no need to write the name of the book they are reading. Reading Calendar is not optional.

  • On Friday I sent home a list of the subtraction facts.  Please use that as a study guide.

Did you know that you use 180 styrofoam plates that get thrown into the trash each school year when you buy your lunch from the cafeteria?

Think about how much garbage that is with ALL the students combined! OUR POOR EARTH!

The Elementary Environmental Club plans to kick off a campaign this week where we encourage students to bring tupperware to the cafeteria. Dona Betty has agreed to serve students their food in their tupperware containers to avoid using styrofoam products. Each time you avoid using a styrofam plate, you will receive a ticket on recycled paper. Trade in 5 of these tickets for a special prize from Ms. Willett's 4A classroom!

Prizes will be continuously changing but to celebrate our beautiful Earth, we're starting with DELICIOUS Earth-shaped cookies donated by "Cookie Fashion Hn"

Bring your tupperware containers this week to school!

Week of February 7-11

A look at what we will be studying this week.........

  • In Language Arts we will continue working on cursive writing.  We will be having homework to practice cursive, this will not be in the blog but in their assignment books.  It is hard to know in advance how far we get each day with cursive so I can't post the cursive homework.  We will continue to work on Reading Comprehension strategies.  This will help the students get into the habit of going back and locating the answer within the passage.  We will also discuss summarizing a story we have read.
  • In Math we will finish Chapter 6 in the Math book. Chapter 6 is 2 digit subtraction with regrouping. Continue studying the addition facts. The timed tests will be on Tuesday and Thursday of this week. Your child knows which test they are working on. It is very important the students get past the addition timed tests so we can move into the subtraction timed test. Please use the website to practice addition and subtraction facts while being timed.

  • In Science we will be starting a unit on Simple Machines.We will studying Chapter 10 and will have a test over Chapter 10 on Tuesday, February 15th.  Everything they need to know is covered in the chapter.
Homework for the week..........

This week's words have Diagraphs ch, sh, th, and wh  (The test will be on Thursday)

Spelling Words: chest, chase, sheep, think, while, chill, shape, thing, white, wheat, mule, fuse, idea, often, second

Monday - Read for 15 minutes. Math WS 14 and 15 (Subtraction Facts practice) and Chose 10 spelling words and write 10 sentences.  Your sentences must have at least 8 words per sentence.  Decorate the valentine bag any way you want and bring back to school on Thursday.  Study Chapter 10 (Science book)  for a test on Tuesday, February 15th.

Tuesday - Read for 15 minutes. Reading Comprehension WS 62 and 78.  Have you child underline the answer within the passage, they may use a highlighter. Math WB 50.  Study Chapter 10 (Science book) for a test on Tuesday, February 15th.

Wednesday - Read for 15 minutes. Math WB 52.  Summarizing WS 104.  Study Chapter 10 (Science book) for a test on Tuesday, February 15th.  Study your spelling words, the test will be Thursday.

  • Etiquette Club students for February are  Natalia R.,  Natalia S., Alejandro, Cristina, and Emonee.  It takes place on Tuesdays, please remember to send a lunch from home, a napkin, fork and knife.

  • Congratulations to Lizza Fernanda and Alejandro Tabilo for being the the Good Citizens for the second quarter.  Joseph Mungia was awarded the Gratitude Award and Valeria Raudales was awarded the Generosity Award.

Week of January 31st - February 4th

A look at what we will be studying this week.........

  • In Language Arts we will begin cursive writing.  We will also discuss how to count syllables and divide words by their syllables.  We will continue to talk about how to use good strategies when anwering questions after reading a passage.
  • In Math we will start Chapter 6 in the Math book.  Chapter 6 is 2 digit subtraction with regrouping.  Continue studying the addition facts. Week of Jan 24th - Jan 28th

A look at what we will be studying this week.........

  • In Language Arts we will be talking about sequencing events.  We will read a passage and put the events in the correct order.  We will also write a "How To" paragraph using time order words to help us.
  • In Math we will finish Chapter 5.  We will work on estimating, problem solving, and adding 3 digit numbers.  Continue studying the addition facts.  The timed tests will be on Tuesday and Thursday of this week.  Your child knows which test they are working on.
  • In Social Studies will wrap up our unit on maps. We will take a map test on Friday.  The main thing the students need to study is the location of the Continents (7) and Oceans (4).  Please refer to the Social Studies book at the front of the book for a map to use as a study guide.  You can also do an online game to help them practice the location of the continents http://www.softschools.com/social_studies/continents/map.jsp  They will also need to label a compass rose with the directions of North, South, East, West, and the intermediate directions of NE, NW, SE, SW.

Spelling Words: finally, first, next, then, last, second, also, after, later, before
Monday - Read for 15 minutes. Write a paragraph about how to make a bowl of cereal.  Write it in the small journal using at least 4 of the time order words.  Math WS 10 (Rounding).  Study for Social Studies test, it is on Friday.
Tuesday - Read for 15 minutes. Sequence WS 196 and Math WB 41.  Study for Social Studies test, it is on Friday.

Wednesday - Read for 15 minutes.  Social Studies WS 27 (Timelines). Study for Social Studies test, it is on Friday.

Thursday - Read for 15 minutes. Study Spelling words. Math Chapter Review WS 171 and 172. Study for Social Studies test, it is on Friday.

Week of January 17th - 21st

A look at what we will be studying this week.........

  • In Language Arts we will continue talking about action verbs.  We will look at past tense and future tense.  We will also discuss Martin Luther King.
  • In Math we will begin talking about 2 digit addition with regrouping.  It is super important the students continue to study for their timed addition tests since we are moving into more difficult addition problems.  They must know their facts quickly and not using fingers to figure out the answers.
  • In Social Studies will continue our unit on maps.
Homework for the week..........

This week's words are past tense verbs.

Spelling Words: added, called, chased, ended, fixed, jumped, mixed, opened, passed, reached, talked, used, walked, visited, yelled

Monday - Read for 15 minutes. Math WB 28.  Using the small spelling journal choose 10 words and write 10 sentences.  One spelling word per sentence.  Each sentence must be at least 8 words long. 

Tuesday - Read for 15 minutes. Math WB 29

Wednesday - Read for 15 minutes. Math WB 30

Thursday - Read for 15 minutes. Study Spelling words. Verbs WS 35

Weekend Homework - 100's Day Project due on Monday, January 24th!  Bring in a display of 100 items of your choice.  They need to be displayed on a shirt, on a necklace, on a belt, on a posterboard, or any way you want.  Be creative!  If you want to use the t-shirt from last you that will be fine.

Week of January 10th - 14th

A look at what we will be studying this week.........
  • In Language Arts we will be writing our final copies of our New Year's Resolutions.  They will be posted on our bulliten board outside our room.  We will begin looking at Cause and Effect and  Action Verbs.
  • In Math we will be reviewing for our PLATO test (we will take it on Friday and Monday). We will continue to take timed addition tests.  Your child should know which test they are on and what they should be studying.
  • In Social Studies will begin a unit on maps.  We will be talking about globes, identifying land and water on a map, following map routes, intermediate directions, and map scales.

Week of January 5th - 7th

A look at what we will be studying this week.........

In Language Arts we will be discussing New Year's Resolutions and writing our own.

In Math we will discuss temperature (fahrenheit).  We will talk about what clothes we should wear with what temperature.  We will compare fahrenheit and celcius.  We will continue to take the math timed test. I will be in touch with you if your child is not progressing as expected with the timed tests.  It is very important your child knows the facts by sight. 

In Social Studies will begin a unit on maps.  We will begin with floor plans and looking at places from an ariel view.

Homeork for the week..........

Wednesday - Read for 15 minutes. Math Workbook page 61 and 57. Return the December reading calendar if you have not do so already.

Thursday - Read for 15 minutes. Social Studies WS 13.

  • The Specials Schedule Link is now on the blog. On the right hand side of the blog under "Special Teachers Blogs" the first link is the link to the specials for our class. Please refer to this schedule, I can not send home a printed copy.
